Get into the right mindset
The true secret to growing an amazing moustache is adopting the right mindset.
At the risk of engaging in over the top rhetoric, nurturing a moustache that’ll make you the envy of your mates and colleagues is a labour of love. It requires patience, understanding, and commitment.
Yeah, that may sound a little like relationship advice - but, that’s because it kind of is!
With your moustache being on your face, it’s a very visible part of your identity. It can be easy to get cold feet and want to shave it off - especially when it reaches the stage where it starts to itch.
But, with the following tips, you can get through these frustrating early stages and end up with a stylish, distinctive ‘tache.
Accept your limits
The simple fact is, not everyone is able to grow every type of moustache.
Ultimately, the type of moustache you’ll be able to grow will depend on a combination of personal factors including the number and distribution of follicles on your face and the level of hormones in your body such as androgens.
Put another way, if you have high levels of testosterone, and you’re blessed with plenty of follicles on your face, then you’ll be able to grow a moustache that’d make Lemmy of Motörhead fame jealous.
If you find you can’t grow your moustache to quite the same extent, then don’t worry - there are plenty of other moustache styles that may be more suitable for you.
The point is, you need to accept what is and isn’t possible with your moustache. Trying to grow out a style that you can’t really achieve is a recipe for frustration…
Create the optimal conditions for moustache growth
Yes, we may have just said that you ultimately have to accept the limits of your moustache growing potential. However, there are some things you can do to help create the optimal conditions for moustache growth:
Relax and de-stress
Ensure you are well-rested and not subjecting yourself to too much stress. Stress releases cortisol (a stress hormone) which can cause your testosterone levels to drop. With lower testosterone levels, you’ll find your moustache doesn’t grow as well.
Eat a balanced diet
If you really want to create the best conditions for moustache growth, then you’ll have to ditch the pies and pints!
By eating a diet that’s rich in protein and vitamins such as C and D, you give your body the nutrients it needs to generate moustache hair.
Hydrate
Another limiting factor for moustache growth can be dehydration. Your moustache hairs require hydration, which they draw from your skin.
By drinking enough water throughout the day (approximately eight glasses), you will ensure your skin is properly hydrated - which in turn leaves your moustache better hydrated. Drink up!
Ensure you have the correct grooming materials
As the old saying goes, ‘fail to prepare, and prepare to fail’. So, ensure you have some quality grooming products to accompany you on your journey towards a perfect moustache.
At a minimum, we’d recommend ensuring you have the following grooming products:
A good-quality trimmer
Ensure you select a trimmer with interchangeable heads so that it’s easier to style your moustache once it’s grown out. Interchangeable heads can also make it easier to keep your moustache at a consistent overall length.
Many trimmers these days are powered using a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, rather than requiring a wall plug. These trimmers are far easier to use as you won’t have to worry about getting tangled up in a power cable.
Moustache scissors
For fine moustache detailing work, many people prefer to use a pair of moustache scissors.
A good pair of quality moustache scissors will allow you to easily cut a straight line across your lip line, or to pick out and cut any stray, erroneous hairs.
Ensure you select a pair of moustache scissors that are pointed at the tips. This allows for the very finest level of detailing and grooming.
Beard oil
Aside from the above implements, you should also ensure that you have the correct grooming products - one of the most important of which is beard oil.
Buy Now - Palo Santo (Reserve Collection) Beard Oil
As we’ve written previously, beard oil moisturises both your moustache hair and the skin underneath your moustache.
Beard oil not only helps to create the optimal conditions for moustache growth, but will prevent itching, dryness and irritation. Beard oil will also make your moustache more manageable, easier to groom and will also add a pleasant scent (depending on the oil you buy).

Beard and scruff cream
For many men, it’s the ‘itchy stage’ that is the biggest hurdle to achieving their desired moustache.
Well, there is a solution; beard and scruff cream.
Whilst it may not have the word ‘moustache’ in its name, beard and scruff cream is the perfect way of soothing those itches and making your moustache feel comfortable and clean all day long.

Here at Cremo, we sell our Cooling Beard & Scruff Cream which is designed to be fast-absorbing, and to simultaneously soften facial hair and moisturise the skin underneath your moustache.
This is an essential moustache growing product.
Face wash, face moisturiser, and face scrub
Why are skin products on this list? Because skin care is a fundamental part of growing a good, healthy moustache - that’s why!
It’s the follicles within your skin that are responsible for the growth of your facial hairs. The follicles are the ‘growth point’ of your facial hairs - sending moisture from the subcutaneous layer beneath your skin up into your hairs.
Given that, it’s vital that you keep the skin on your face well moisturised and clean (with no blocked pores).
By establishing a comprehensive, daily skincare routine, you’ll establish the best possible conditions for growing your moustache out.
Here at Cremo, we’d strongly recommend using the following combination of skincare products on a daily basis:
> Face scrub - choose an exfoliating face scrub which will scrub away dead skin cells and other impurities that can block pores and impair hair growth.
> Face wash - select a face wash that’ll thoroughly clean your skin and unblock pores, without breaking down the all-important emollient barrier.
> Face moisturiser - be sure to pick a moisturiser which is explicitly designed for use on your face. Ideally, you’ll want to buy a facial moisturiser that is fast-absorbing, so you can get on with your day quickly.

Choose a growth strategy
An important thing you’ll need to consider before you start growing your moustache is what strategy you’re going to adopt.
You have two basic growth strategies open to you:
> Grow a beard out and then shave it down to a moustache.
> Grow your moustache from scratch whilst keeping the rest of your face clean-shaven.
Which strategy you choose is largely down to personal preference. For some people, it’s more comfortable to grow a beard first and then shave it down to a moustache. Other people prefer to grow a moustache right off the bat.
Ultimately, it’s up to you!
Choose a moustache style
When it comes to selecting a moustache style, it’s important not to consider the style in isolation. You should also think about how the style you’ve chosen relates to the shape of your face.
All too often, men choose moustache styles that simply don’t ‘go with’ their face.
For example, if you have a rather square face, then a heavier, wider moustache style will be the perfect fit. Likewise, if you have a rounder, oval-shaped face then go for a lighter, triangular moustache style with a medium width.
As the illustration below shows, there’s a veritable cornucopia of moustache styles to choose from!
Maintain a thorough skincare regime
As we mentioned earlier, it’s vital that you have the correct tools and grooming products to hand when you’re growing out your moustache.
However, there’s an important point we need to emphasise - you actually have to use them!
If you’re determined to grow out your moustache in the best possible way, then you should be actioning a daily skincare routine.
Below, we’ve set out an easy to follow (and maintain) facial skincare routine that’ll be ideal for encouraging the growth of your moustache.
Exfoliate
At least two or three times a week, you want to exfoliate your skin (including the skin underneath your moustache).
By exfoliating, you’ll be removing dead skin cells, dirt and excess sebum from your skin. Not only is this hygienic, but it keeps your follicles free from obstruction - allowing your facial hairs to grow to their fullest extent.
Don’t just rush out and buy any old exfoliator, though! It’s important to note that there are two main types of exfoliator that you can buy:
> Chemical exfoliators.
> Abrasive exfoliators.
What are chemical exfoliators?
As their name suggests, chemical exfoliators use mild acids to remove dead skins, dirt and excess sebum, and open up your follicles.
However, many people are wary of using chemical exfoliators as they can make your skin red, sensitive, and lead to it drying out - not something you want when you’re trying to grow your moustache.
Abrasive exfoliators
Abrasive exfoliators use ‘chunky’ ingredients which, when rubbed into your skin, manually exfoliate it and remove dead skin cells, dirt and excess sebum.
Many people prefer abrasive exfoliators as they are a more natural form of exfoliator. They also tend to provide a much fresher, cleaner feel post-exfoliation.

Cleanse
On a daily basis, you want to be cleansing your skin. Ensure you have a good quality facial cleanser to hand (such as our Daily Face Wash).
Buy Now - Cremo Daily Face Wash
Face washes such as the ones available from Cremo are specially formulated for daily use and are designed to clean your skin without irritating it or breaking down your skin’s all-important emollient barrier.
Using a face wash couldn’t be easier, either. Simply apply to damp skin, massage it in, and then wash away. This whole process shouldn’t take longer than about 30 seconds.
Moisturise
On a daily basis, you also want to be moisturising your facial skin (including the skin under your moustache).
Ensure you have a moisturiser that’s specifically designed for use on facial skin. In addition, it can be helpful to buy a moisturiser that’s designed with a fast-absorbing formula. This’ll ensure you don’t have to hang around waiting for it to dry.

How much moisturiser you should use will depend on your skin type, as well as the time of year and how much you’ll be exposing your face to the elements.
For people with drier skin types, it’s best to err on the side of caution and apply more moisturiser than you think you’ll need.
To apply, simply add a dollop of moisturiser to your fingers (after you’ve cleaned your face with face wash) and rub into your face until it is absorbed.
Wash and condition your moustache
As well as maintaining an excellent facial skincare regime, you should be grooming your moustache too.
Just like the hairs on your head, your moustache will benefit from being regularly shampooed and conditioned.
The best product to use on your moustache is a good quality 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner. This saves you time and effort and gets the job done quicker!
Ideally, you should be washing and conditioning your moustache every two to three days.
Use beard oil regularly
Aside from regularly giving your moustache a good wash and condition, you should also be applying beard oil to it every single day.
As you may have already read, beard oil is a non-negotiable if you want to grow the very best moustache. It helps to moisturise and hydrate both your skin and your facial hair. It absorbs into your follicles, providing a boost. Plus, it makes your moustache smell fantastic!
Buy Now - Cremo Beard Collection (also perfect for moustaches!)
To apply beard oil, simply use the dropper to add a few drops to your fingers and then massage the oil into your moustache, being careful to apply evenly and thoroughly. If you’ve bought a quality beard oil, then you’ll find that it’s quickly absorbed into your moustache.
Comb your moustache
Another of our top moustache growing tips is to regularly comb your moustache. Ideally, you should comb your moustache at least once a day.
Once it gets long enough (around 2 cm), then combing will help you to keep your moustache in good condition, stimulate blood flow to your follicles, and help remove dead or stray hairs.
Regular combing will also keep your moustache clean and get rid of any particles or dirt that could easily clog up your pores underneath your moustache (potentially inhibiting growth).
Maintaining your moustache
Follow all of the above tips, and you’ll be able to grow a moustache of which you will be proud.
But, that’s not the end of your moustache journey. Once you’ve achieved your moustache, you’ve got to maintain it.
So, be sure to keep up that daily facial skincare regime, keep on washing and conditioning your moustache, and make sure you’re applying beard oil every day. Naturally, you’ll want to stay on top of your trimming and styling too.
