How To Stop Beard Itch
Beard itch can rear its unwanted head at any stage in the growing process, and sadly, we’ve all been there. Whether it's just as your beard begins to regrow after a groom or when you’ve got a full Viking look, beard itch can arise.
An itchy beard can affect anyone with, you guessed it, a beard. No matter the length of the hair, the itch can occur. A few factors come into play as to why and how, and don’t worry; we’ll go into detail on that if that’s what you’re here for! And we will provide you with those much-needed solutions for stopping an itchy bear in its tracks.
Not only is beard itch extremely annoying, but it’s not the best look. But you’re with Cremo, the men’s grooming experts. We’ve put together this guide on stopping beard itching once and for all. Here, we explain what causes beard itching, how to prevent it, and how to treat it if you’re suffering.
What causes beard itch?
There are a few reasons your beard might be itchy. And there are different levels of severity of beard itch. You may have a very mild beard itch, which is hardly noticeable, or you could be suffering from quite a severe beard itch. Before we delve into how your beard itch can be treated, it's good to know what the cause of the problem is.
Causes of beard itch include the natural regrowth of your beard, dry skin, ingrown hairs, dandruff, or more severe skin conditions such as psoriasis or tinea barbae.
Natural regrowth
Once a beard has been shaved, the sharp edges of the hair might first irritate the skin when it is just beginning to grow out, causing itching.
Dry skin
When you shave, you not only remove the hair but also a thin layer of skin cells. This can disrupt the skin's natural barrier function, which can, in turn, create dry skin. This is avoidable with a good grooming routine.
Dandruff
People often mistake dry skin and dandruff for one another when it comes to the skin under a beard. Although they have very similar symptoms, dandruff is usually much more flaky, though just as itchy.
Ingrown hairs
In some cases, once a beard is shaved and is growing back, the hair becomes stuck beneath the skin, resulting in ingrown hairs. This ingrown hair can be rather itchy, appear as a small lump, and may be red.
Skin conditions
Other reasons for an itchy beard are skin conditions such as psoriasis, tinea barbae, dermatitis, or folliculitus. If you think you could be suffering from a skin condition that causes severe itching, we recommend contacting your GP.
How to prevent and stop beard itch
Now we’ve covered what could be causing your beard to itch, let's look at how we prevent it from happening. One of the best things you can do to stop your beard itching is to make sure you stick to a proper grooming routine. Follow these steps below, and you should be able to say goodbye to beard itch forever.
Wash your beard regularly
Making sure you’re on top of your beard-washing routine will drastically reduce your chances of the dreaded beard itch. Washing your beard removes dead skin cells, extra oil, and other debris that can build up beneath the beard. You shouldn’t just use any old wash; generic hair washes aren’t made for a beard. We recommend using a proper beard wash.

Condition your beard
Keeping your beard clean and soft is a great way of avoiding beard itch. Sometimes, the itch can come from your beard tickling your skin. It’s less likely to itch if the hair is soft. A beard conditioner is needed on a beard of any length – long or stubble – to keep it soft.
We recommend using our Cooling Beard & Scruff Cream as a conditioner, post-clean.
Use products with moisturising properties
A lot like our cooling beard cream and beard softener, you need to invest in products that will promote moisture retention for your skin beneath the beard. This will reduce the chances of dryness and, in turn, itching and flaking.
Use a beard oil
Beard oil is made to hydrate and condition facial hair and the skin underneath. Beard oil helps to rebuild the natural oils that can often be removed during washing if used regularly. And the benefits of a good beard oil don’t end there. Beard oil can help soften the hair, making it less likely to irritate the skin as it grows. It can also promote beard growth if that’s your goal! When choosing a beard oil, look for one with argan oil and jojoba oil. These natural properties help hydrate & soften brittle facial hair.

Comb your beard
Messy, untamed hearts can cause itchiness. To combat this, comb your beard daily. It’s super easy, takes a few seconds and will keep knots and tangles at bay, especially if you have a particularly impressive beard.
Top tip: comb your beard before and after grooming. This is because combing will start the exfoliation process, which helps remove the dead skin cells and fight against irritation.
